Sitting and following the breath to keep the mind focused and aware is a very well-known mindfulness method. Mindfulness is a technique extracted from Buddhism where one tries to notice present thoughts feeling and sensations without judgement. The aim is to create a state of bare awareness.

For any Buddhist tradition whose approach to meditation practice has its doctrinal foundation in the notions of the storehouse consciousness or the tathāgatagarbha for example an understanding of mindfulness aimed at recognizing a continuity that corresponds to these notions is eminently meaningful. This awareness includes awareness of ones body of sensations of mental states and of everything both within and without oneself. People have been practicing mindfulness for thousands of years whether on its own or as part of a larger tradition.

And indeed mindfulness is not the exclusive territory of Buddhism. Ultimately it is a way of training the mind that is integral to all other elements of Buddhist practice. When you are being actively mindful you are noticing the world around you as well as your thoughts feelings behaviors movements and effects you have on others around you. In other words mindfulness is not just a kind of bare attention.
